Medication will only be administered under the following:

A drug or medication is administered to a child from the original container or package as supplied by a pharmacist with a pharmacy label attached, outlining the following information:

  • The child’s full name
  • The name of the drug or medication
  • The dosage, frequency and route to be administered
  • The date purchased
  • The date of expiration (where applicable)
  • Instruction for storage and administration

All drugs and medications on the premise will be:

  • Stored in accordance with the instructions for storage on the label
  • Administered in accordance with the instructions on the label
  • Inaccessible at all times to children in a locked container
  • Leftover medication or surplus of medication shall be returned in the original container to a parent of a child or discarded with parent permission.
  • Doctor’s notes can be used in place of a proper pharmacy label in such cases where ongoing medication is necessary, i.e. for a child who experiences febrile seizures. The note must contain the same information as a pharmacy label.

*Non-prescription medication will not be administered (unless as indicated above).

Parents are required to complete a permission form for administration of medication to their child. This form will provide details regarding date, times and dosage to be administered. In addition to parent signature, when the form is first filled out, parents need to INITIAL DAILY FOR PERMISSION. If the medication form is not fully completed, educators will not administer the medication. Upon completion of the form, it will be placed in the child’s file.

A designated Registered Early Childhood Educator is assigned to administer medication.

In the absence of the designated staff member, the Supervisor will designate another Registered Early Childhood Education staff to administer medication.

To ensure prompt administration, children of school age (6 to 12 years) who are developmentally responsible to administer their own medication will be permitted to carry their own asthma or emergency allergy medication as per discussion with Supervisor and parent of the child. Parents will be required to submit to the Supervisor, a detailed written procedure for the administration of the medication.
