The Smoke-Free Ontario Act came into force on May 31, 2006. The act prohibits smoking in enclosed workplaces and enclosed public places in Ontario in order to protect workers and the public from the hazards of second-hand smoke.
The Learning Enrichment Foundation is committed to providing a smoke free environment for all families, children and staff members. Smoking is prohibited in all Child Care Centres. This includes programs in TDSB, TCDSB, Civic Centre and LEF main office.
Each Child Care Centre and Before and After Care Program Supervisor will ensure smoking is prohibited in playrooms, playgrounds, washroom facilities, etc.
This will be conducted through:
- Orientation of the program upon a family starting the program
- Orientation of an employee and/or volunteer hired to work in the program.
- Spaces used by the children will be free of ashtrays and any object that serves as one. A person who does not comply with the smoke free policy will be removed from the premises immediately, and the Supervisor will inform the Senior Manager. A written warning will be given to the person contravening the policy. In the event a person continues to contravene the smoke free policy, Supervisors will inform their public health representative.
No Smoking signs will be posted at all entrances, exits, washrooms, and other appropriate locations.
ENFORCEMENTS: Local public health units will carry out inspections and investigate complaints at all licensed Child Care Centres and Before and After Care Programs. There is a maximum fine of $5,000.00 if anyone contravenes the above policy.
