Welcome to the Infant room.

The following is a list of articles you will need to bring on your child’s first day at the Centre:

  • Diapers and wipes
  • Powder and creams if used for diaper changes
  • If your child is on formula – please bring in labeled, prepared bottles for your child’s day at the Centre
  • If your child is not on formula – please bring three empty bottles
  • Two sets of extra indoor clothing in case of accidents
  • Appropriate outdoor clothing depending on the weather
  • Clothes that you do not mind getting dirty

In our infant program, the environment is the third teacher. We establish a stimulating learning environment that invites the children to use their senses and motor skills to explore the classroom. Reflective practitioners meet each child’s individual needs and program to meet their developmental goals. We continue to cultivate a positive, nurturing relationship with children and their families to foster engagement, collaboration, and sense of community. We acknowledge the importance of each child’s health and well being as they grow and develop.

When you arrive in the Infant room, and settle your child into the program, it is important that you complete your child’s daily chart. This information helps the staff to understand your child’s schedule for that day. Throughout the day the staff will record information about your child, i.e. sleep times, diaper checks/changes and meal times. The staff will also discuss your child’s day with you when you pick up your child. Upon arriving and departing the centre, staff will sign in/sign out your child.

Your child will participate in a variety of activities planned and carried out by the staff within the room. These activities are specifically planned to help your child and the other children in the room to enhance and develop a variety of skills. The staff’s first priority is to meet the children’s basic needs.

Along with planning activities, the educators will also plan to meet your child’s individual needs within the room. Educators complete individual program plans for your child; this assists educators in preparing program plans. Please refer to the weekly program plan posted in the room to see what educators have planned for the week.

The Centre provides jarred food, table food, and homogenized, soya or 2% milk. When introducing new foods to your child a “Permission to Serve New Foods” form must be filled in and signed before the staff can begin serving these foods to your child here at the Centre. Please ask educators or Supervisor for a copy of this form. If your child is ready to start table foods, please inform educators in your child’s room and refer to the weekly menu posted in the program. Also, if your child has any food allergies or restrictions, please inform educators.

Each day children will spend two hours outside. Infants either use their own playground or venture out into the local neighbourhood for a walk. Children do go outside; please ensure your child has appropriate outdoor clothing.

Sleep Policy and Supervision Procedure:

Children younger than 12 months are recommended, as outlined in the Joint Statement of Safe Sleep, to be placed on their backs, unless instructed by parent and accompanied by a physicians’ note.

The designated sleep room for infants that includes all children up to 18 months of age will have sufficient lighting to enable educators to conduct and complete direct visual checks on children who are resting. A visual sleep room attendance will be posted on the door leading to the sleep room. The attendance will indicate which children are in the room and resting. Educators will update the attendance as needed.

Educators will perform direct visual checks every 20 minutes and record 2 visual checks per hour on the Infant Daily Report (7.2.12 – 1). Sleeping children will be checked for breathing signs, temperature, signs of distress, or unusual behaviours. Additionally, sleep area/room guidelines are posted in the sleep area/room.
