Welcome to the Toddler Program.

The following is a list of articles you will need to bring on your child’s first day at the Centre:

  • Diapers and wipes
  • Powder and creams if used for diaper changes
  • Two sets of extra indoor clothing in case of accidents (especially when your child begins toilet training!)
  • Appropriate outdoor clothing depending on the weather
  • Clothes that you do not mind getting dirty

When you arrive in the Toddler program, and your child is settled, educators will sign your child in and then sign your child out when you are departing from the Centre.

In our Toddler program, we view the child as “competent, capable of complex thinking, curious, and rich in potential,” we are able to realize their strengths and abilities and program meaningful learning opportunities that focus on a child-directed and child-centered approach. Within our toddler programs, we build on teachable moments to help each child develop confidence in self-help skills to cultivate their independence. We establish an environment that provides a connection and sense of belonging within the children, parents and families, educators, and the community.

Toddlers rest time shall not exceed two hours in length. The Toddlers are encouraged to sleep, however, if your child does not sleep, he/she will be offered a quiet activity.

Each day children will spend two hours outside daily; please ensure that your child has appropriate outdoor clothing.

** Please remember that if your child is well enough to attend the Centre, they must also participate in outdoor activities.

Rest period:

As per the CHILD CARE AND EARLY YEARS ACT, 2014 (CCEYA), each child between the ages of 18 months, up to and including 5 years of age, in attendance for more than 6 hours, will have the opportunity to rest for a period of time, not exceeding 2 hours in length.

Children can be encouraged to rest quietly. Any children who are having difficulty resting are offered the opportunity to participate in a quiet activity. Children must not be punished for not resting quietly.

No child can be forced or punished to sleep, or to remain completely still on their cots. (Refer to Behaviour Management Policy & Guidelines 7.2.04.)

Each child should have a clearly labeled cot/crib, own sheet and blanket; the cots/cribs should be laid out approximately 18 inches apart from each other in the same manner each day and a master bed plan posted.

Sleep Policy and Supervision Procedure for Toddlers and Preschoolers:

Visual checks for all toddlers and preschoolers will be conducted and recorded every hour. Visual checks will be documented on the Direct Visual Check Form (7.2.12-2) provided.

Staff will indicate a visual check has been made with a checkmark beside each child’s name, and initial when visual checks are completed. Staff are required to be physically present beside the child, checking for breathing, signs of distress and/or unusual behaviours.

The sleep area/room will have sufficient lighting to enable staff to conduct and complete direct visual checks on children who are resting.

Parents have the opportunity to be advised of their child’s sleep patterns or behaviours during sleep through verbal communication with staff or by consulting the daily charts provided.
